How We Build Portfolios

We build portfolios for Canadian investors using factor-based funds. Over two decades we have worked with some of the largest firms in factor investing, helping them design and implement approaches built for the Canadian market.

Our approach

Factor investing is how, not what.

We build portfolios using factor investing, an approach based on decades of academic research into drivers of return such as value, momentum and quality. We have helped create factor-based ETFs, so we know how they are built, what they cost and how they behave, and we use that experience when we choose funds for client portfolios.

Each portfolio is fitted to your goals, time horizon and risk tolerance, documented through the account-opening and know-your-client process. Factor tilts can lag the broad market, sometimes for years, so we measure every portfolio against a plain index alternative and report the gap in years.

Before you invest

Factor investing carries risk, including long periods of lagging the broad market. We walk you through how a factor-based portfolio fits your goals before anything is invested.

The engine

Three factors we use, and their risks.

01

Value

Paying less for each dollar of earnings.

Value tilts toward companies priced low relative to their fundamentals. It has had long stretches of lagging the market as well as leading it.

02

Momentum

Letting strength do some of the work.

Momentum tilts toward stocks that have done well recently. It can reverse sharply, which is why we hold it alongside other factors.

03

Quality

Leaning toward profitable companies.

Quality tilts toward profitable, conservatively run companies. No factor removes the risk of loss.

Why this matters

Retirement is not about how much you make. It is about how fast you recover.

Much of the industry treats factors as the destination. We treat them as the engine. The destination is a retirement that stays on time.
